Everything we know appears within existence.
Matter exists.
Energy exists.
Life exists.
Consciousness exists.
Natural order exists.
Cause and effect operate within existence.
But one question stands behind them all:
Why is
there existence at all?
If everything we encounter depends upon
something else, then the deepest question is no longer merely how the
universe works, but:
What ultimately accounts for the existence of
the entire framework in which causes, laws, matter, consciousness, Creation,
and life themselves are possible?
DSPES identifies this ultimate foundation as:
The central proposition is simple:
Whatever belongs to existence cannot
ultimately explain why existence itself exists unless there is an ultimate
foundation that does not derive its existence from something prior.
Human beings have given many names to the
ultimate reality behind existence.
Some speak of God.
Others speak of Creation, the Absolute,
Universal Consciousness, the First Cause, the Ground of Being, cosmic
intelligence, primordial energy, or ultimate reality.
But names alone do not settle the question.
A word may identify an idea without proving
that the idea has been correctly defined.
DSPES therefore begins elsewhere.
It asks:
What must be true for anything whatsoever to
exist?
If a proposed ultimate reality is itself
evolving, dependent, changing, developing, receiving information, acquiring
knowledge, passing through stages, or belonging to a greater framework, then
DSPES asks an unavoidable question:
What
explains that framework?
And if another reality explains it, we must
ask again:
What explains that reality?
The question cannot be resolved merely by
extending the chain indefinitely.
DSPES therefore distinguishes between:
things that exist dependently
and
that upon which dependent existence ultimately
rests.
The latter is what this article calls:
THE
ETERNAL SOURCE.
Not merely the oldest being.
Not merely the greatest intelligence.
Not merely the universe.
Not merely Creation.
Not merely consciousness.
Not merely energy.
Not merely a cosmic law.
But:
The Ultimate Cause and Origin of Existence.
DEFINITION
OF TERMS
1. Eternal
Source
The Eternal Source is the DSPES
designation for the ultimate foundation from which all dependent existence
derives.
It is not defined merely as something that
existed for an extremely long period.
“Eternal” here means that its existence is not
derived from a preceding created cause.
2. Ultimate
Cause
The Ultimate Cause means the deepest
causal foundation beyond which no prior dependent cause is required.
An ultimate cause cannot itself merely be
another link in the same chain requiring explanation.
3. Origin
of Existence
The Origin of Existence refers not
simply to the beginning of our present universe but to the ultimate ground from
which all created, contingent, derivative, or dependent reality proceeds.
4. Creation
Within this article, Creation means the
total created or derivative order: nature, matter, energy, laws, structures,
processes, living systems, and whatever other realms genuinely belong to
created existence.
Creation is therefore distinguished from its
ultimate Source.
5.
Dependent Existence
Something possesses dependent existence
when the explanation for its existence, condition, development, or continuation
is not completely contained within itself.
6.
Contingency
A contingent reality is something whose
existence is not logically self-explanatory. It exists, but its existence
invites the question:
Why does this exist rather than not exist?
7.
Causality
Causality concerns the relationship by which
realities, events, states, or conditions arise through sufficient causes or
explanatory grounds.
DSPES does not assume that every event must
have exactly the same kind of cause. It asks whether dependent reality
possesses an adequate explanation.
THE
CENTRAL DISTINCTION
One of the most important distinctions in
DSPES is:
THE
SOURCE IS NOT THE SAME THING AS WHAT PROCEEDS FROM THE SOURCE.
A painting is not the painter.
A building is not its architect.
A written law is not the lawgiver.
A generated system is not necessarily its
generator.
Likewise, if Creation is developing,
expanding, learning, transforming, evolving, or proceeding through stages, then
those characteristics describe something undergoing process.
That immediately raises the deeper question:
Upon what reality does the existence and
possibility of that process depend?
Calling the developing system “ultimate” does
not automatically make it ultimate.
Its characteristics must survive examination.
WHY
“ULTIMATE CAUSE AND ORIGIN OF EXISTENCE”?
This formulation deliberately contains two
elements.
Ultimate
Cause
This addresses explanation.
Why does anything exist?
Origin of
Existence
This addresses derivation.
From what ultimate reality does dependent
existence arise?
Together they are stronger than simply saying:
“Source of Reality.”
The phrase “Source of Reality” could be
misunderstood as referring to some cosmic process located within reality.
Likewise, “Ultimate Origin” alone might
emphasize beginning without sufficiently emphasizing continuing explanatory
dependence.
But:
THE
ULTIMATE CAUSE AND ORIGIN OF EXISTENCE
states both.
The Eternal Source is presented as the
ultimate explanatory foundation and the ultimate origin of dependent existence.
THE
QUESTION OF INFINITE REGRESS
Suppose A exists because of B.
B exists because of C.
C exists because of D.
And the sequence continues.
Have we explained why the entire sequence
exists?
Not necessarily.
Extending a chain does not automatically
explain the existence of the chain itself.
Imagine an infinite row of lamps, each
receiving electricity from another lamp.
No matter how many lamps are added, we still
have not identified the source of the electricity.
Similarly, DSPES asks whether an endless chain
of dependent realities can ultimately explain dependency itself.
If every member requires explanation outside
itself, merely multiplying dependent members does not produce independence.
Therefore the search eventually concerns not
merely an earlier member of the sequence, but a fundamentally different
category:
A reality
whose existence is not borrowed from another dependent reality.
That is the conceptual role of the Eternal
Source.
THE
SEVEN-PILLAR EXAMINATION
The Eternal Source concept must not be
protected from examination merely because it is called ultimate.
DSPES applies its own Seven Pillars to the
claim.
I. TRUTH
Major Law:
Reality must correspond to what actually is.
Relevant
Minor Laws:
Reality
Correspondence
Evidence
Consistency
Causality
Non-Contradiction
Verification
Consequence
Accountability
The first question is not:
What do we want the Eternal Source to be?
It is:
What does reality require?
If dependent existence requires an adequate
explanation, the search for an ultimate explanatory ground is rationally
legitimate.
But DSPES must also acknowledge the boundary
of evidence.
The Eternal Source cannot simply be declared
scientifically measured merely because philosophical reasoning points toward an
ultimate foundation.
The claim belongs primarily to metaphysical
reasoning, not ordinary laboratory measurement.
Therefore:
TRUTH
JUDGMENT
The question of an ultimate foundation is strongly
supported as a legitimate metaphysical problem.
The precise nature of the Eternal Source
remains subject to the limits of human knowledge.
II.
LIGHT
Major Law:
Truth must move toward understanding rather
than obscurity.
Relevant
Minor Laws:
Understanding
Knowledge
Discernment
Transparency
Instruction
Discovery
Clarity
Exposure
Calling every unexplained reality “mystery”
does not produce understanding.
Neither does assigning an impressive title to
an unexplained cosmic system.
Light demands distinction.
We must distinguish:
- Source
from product,
- cause
from effect,
- eternal
from merely ancient,
- necessary
from dependent,
- ultimate
reality from developing reality,
- evidence
from assertion,
- knowledge
from speculation.
LIGHT
JUDGMENT
The Eternal Source concept becomes
intellectually useful only when its meaning is clearly distinguished from
Creation and from entities operating within Creation.
III.
LOVE
Major Law:
True order cannot be separated from right
relationship and proper regard for existence.
Relevant
Minor Laws:
Compassion
Justice
Relationship
Mutual Care
Faithfulness
Service
Responsibility
Peace
Love does not independently prove the Eternal
Source.
But once existence is viewed as received
rather than self-created, human life acquires a different moral perspective.
We did not cause ourselves to exist.
We did not invent reality.
We did not establish the conditions necessary
for consciousness, life, relationship, or moral responsibility.
Recognition of dependence can therefore
produce humility rather than arrogance.
LOVE
JUDGMENT
The Eternal Source concept is consistent with
the recognition that existence is not our private possession and that our
treatment of others carries moral weight.
IV.
POWER
Major Law:
Power concerns the capacity to cause, sustain,
govern, and act responsibly.
Relevant
Minor Laws:
Authority
Responsibility
Stewardship
Proportionality
Non-Coercion
Self-Mastery
Just Use of Force
Accountability in Power
Whatever ultimately accounts for existence
cannot possess less causal adequacy than the reality that depends upon it.
This does not mean that human categories of
physical force can simply be projected onto the Eternal Source.
Ultimate causality is not equivalent to
muscular strength, political authority, technological ability, or cosmic
weaponry.
The question is more fundamental:
What possesses sufficient causal reality for
dependent existence to be possible at all?
POWER
JUDGMENT
If an Eternal Source exists as the ultimate
ground of dependent reality, its power must be understood primarily as ontological
causal sufficiency, not merely physical force.
V.
CREATION
Major Law:
Created order reveals structure, relationship,
limits, causality, and dependence.
Relevant
Minor Laws:
Nature
Design
Cause-and-Effect in Nature
Growth
Order
Balance
Limits
Interdependence
Sustainability
Regeneration
This pillar creates perhaps the most important
distinction of the article.
Creation is
not automatically the Eternal Source.
If Creation:
- develops,
- evolves,
- expands,
- changes,
- passes
through stages,
- possesses
internal laws,
- contains
measurable structures,
- or
depends upon conditions,
then Creation itself becomes an object
requiring explanation.
Calling Creation “eternal” does not settle
that question.
Calling Creation “consciousness” does not
settle it.
Calling Creation “energy” does not settle it.
Calling Creation “the Absolute” does not
settle it.
The real question remains:
Is it
genuinely self-existent, or has the word “ultimate” merely been attached to
something that still exhibits dependency?
CREATION
JUDGMENT
Creation points beyond itself whenever its own
characteristics reveal process, structure, dependence, or development.
VI.
WISDOM
Major Law:
Explanations must possess coherence,
proportion, and sufficient depth.
Relevant
Minor Laws:
Prudence
Ends and Means
Coherence
Sound Judgment
Long-Term Consequence
Teachability
Correctability
Proportion
Tested Knowledge
Wisdom prevents two opposite errors.
The first error is claiming more than the
evidence permits.
The second is refusing to follow reasoning
merely because the conclusion extends beyond direct sensory observation.
We cannot see causality itself with our eyes,
yet we infer causality from relationships.
We cannot physically hold mathematical
necessity, logic, meaning, or truth correspondence in our hands, yet they
remain indispensable to rational thought.
Wisdom therefore asks:
Which explanation best accounts for the whole
structure without creating greater contradictions than it resolves?
WISDOM
JUDGMENT
An ultimate non-dependent foundation provides
greater explanatory coherence than treating an indefinitely dependent chain as
self-explanatory.
VII.
LIFE
Major Law:
Life carries dignity, continuity,
responsibility, and consequence.
Relevant
Minor Laws:
Dignity
Non-Harm
Preservation
Health
Restoration
Community
Generational Duty
Responsibility for the Weak
Continuity
Mortality and Limits
Human beings receive life.
We do not originate ourselves.
We enter an already existing order possessing
laws, limitations, consequences, relationships, and conditions necessary for
survival.
This gives life an unmistakable character of
dependence.
Whether one begins with biology, cosmology,
philosophy, or consciousness, the individual human being clearly cannot
reasonably claim to be the source of existence.
LIFE
JUDGMENT
Human dependence upon realities preceding and
exceeding individual existence strongly reinforces the distinction between the
receiver of existence and its ultimate origin.
THE
GREAT CATEGORY ERROR
A recurring philosophical mistake is to take
something discovered within existence and declare it the explanation of
existence itself.
Consider the possibilities.
If someone says:
“Energy is ultimate.”
DSPES asks:
What is energy, why does it possess its
properties, and why does an energy-bearing reality exist?
If someone says:
“Consciousness is ultimate.”
DSPES asks:
What consciousness? Does it change? Does it
know? Does it develop? Upon what structure does such consciousness depend?
If someone says:
“Creation is ultimate.”
DSPES asks:
Does Creation evolve?
If yes, what explains the reality, laws,
possibilities, and conditions within which that evolution occurs?
If someone says:
“The universe created itself.”
DSPES asks:
What existed in order to perform the creating?
Something cannot function as the complete
cause of its own existence in the same respect in which it did not yet exist.
THE
ETERNAL SOURCE IS NOT MERELY THE FIRST EVENT
This distinction is crucial.
The Eternal Source is not simply:
“Whatever happened first.”
The first event would still be an event.
An event presupposes some reality in which the
event is possible.
Therefore the question goes deeper than
chronology.
The Eternal Source is not merely earlier than
everything else.
It is the proposed ontological foundation
upon which the existence of everything derivative ultimately depends.
ETERNAL
DOES NOT MEAN “VERY OLD”
Something existing for:
a billion years,
a trillion years,
or even an immeasurable sequence of ages
would not automatically qualify as eternal in
the DSPES sense.
Duration does not equal self-existence.
A system may be extraordinarily ancient while
still depending upon realities more fundamental than itself.
Thus:
Age cannot
substitute for ultimacy.
CAN THE
ETERNAL SOURCE EVOLVE?
This question exposes an important boundary.
Evolution ordinarily involves movement from
one condition toward another.
It implies:
- development,
- transition,
- acquisition,
- transformation,
- potential
becoming actual,
- or
movement between states.
If the ultimate foundation of existence itself
must acquire something it previously lacked, DSPES must ask:
What establishes the possibility and standard
of that development?
If another reality determines those
conditions, the supposedly ultimate reality is no longer ultimate.
Therefore DSPES distinguishes the Eternal
Source from any cosmological entity described as continuously developing toward
some greater state.
Such an entity may be immensely powerful.
It may be unimaginably ancient.
It may even be responsible for our universe.
But none of those characteristics alone
establish that it is the Ultimate Cause and Origin of Existence.
SOURCE
AND CREATION
The distinction may be expressed simply:
THE ETERNAL
SOURCE
The ultimate foundation.
↓
CREATION
The derivative order.
↓
NATURE AND
COSMIC STRUCTURE
The organized framework.
↓
LIFE
Living systems within Creation.
↓
HUMAN
CONSCIOUSNESS
A participant within existence.
Human consciousness therefore does not become
the origin of reality merely by understanding more of it.
Reality precedes our interpretation of
reality.
This remains one of the governing principles
of DSPES:
REALITY
IS DISCOVERED, NOT CREATED BY THOUGHT.
THE
BIBLICAL WITNESS
DSPES does not depend upon Scripture alone for
the philosophical argument presented above, but the biblical writings
repeatedly preserve the distinction between the Source and created reality.
Genesis opens not with Creation creating
itself but with Creation receiving existence:
“In the beginning God created the heaven and
the earth.”
— Genesis 1:1
The Psalmist distinguishes Creator from
created order:
“Before the mountains were brought forth, or
ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to
everlasting, thou art God.”
— Psalm 90:2
Isaiah presents the Source as preceding and
accounting for created reality:
“I have made the earth, and created man upon
it.”
— Isaiah 45:12
John similarly begins beyond ordinary created
sequence:
“All things were made by him; and without him
was not any thing made that was made.”
— John 1:3
Whatever theological interpretations later
traditions may attach to these passages, the structural distinction remains
clear:
The Source
is distinguished from what is sourced.
DOES
THIS PROVE EVERYTHING ABOUT THE ETERNAL SOURCE?
No.
DSPES must remain disciplined.
Reasoning toward an ultimate foundation does
not automatically establish every later theological doctrine ever attributed to
that foundation.
It does not automatically establish:
- a
particular religious institution,
- a
particular priesthood,
- every
claimed revelation,
- every
sacred book,
- every
doctrine,
- every
miracle story,
- or
every human description of divine activity.
Each additional claim requires its own
examination.
That distinction protects the argument.
One may conclude that dependent existence
requires an ultimate foundation without immediately accepting every historical
claim made in the name of that foundation.
WHAT
DSPES AFFIRMS
DSPES therefore makes a carefully limited but
weighty proposition:
Dependent existence ultimately requires a
sufficient foundation that is not merely another dependent member within the
same explanatory chain. DSPES designates that ultimate foundation as the
Eternal Source—the Ultimate Cause and Origin of Existence.
This does not abolish investigation.
It establishes where deeper investigation
begins.
SEVEN
QUESTIONS THAT EVERY CLAIMED “ULTIMATE REALITY” MUST ANSWER
Whenever a philosophy identifies something as
ultimate, ask:
1. Does it
change?
If so, what explains the conditions making
change possible?
2. Does it
evolve?
If so, toward what standard and according to
what underlying law?
3. Does it
acquire knowledge?
If so, what truth exists independently enough
to be acquired?
4. Does it
operate according to laws?
If so, are those laws identical with it,
generated by it, or logically prior to its operations?
5. Does it
depend upon energy, structure, dimensions, information, or process?
If yes, what explains those dependencies?
6. Could it
have been otherwise?
If yes, what determines its possibilities?
7. Does its
existence ultimately explain itself?
If not, the search has not yet reached the
Eternal Source.

CORRECTED
DSPES FORMULATION
The Eternal Source should not be defined as
merely the greatest being, oldest intelligence, highest consciousness, cosmic
energy, universe, evolving Creation, or most advanced entity known or imagined.
A more disciplined formulation is:
The Eternal Source is the ultimate,
non-derivative foundation of existence—the Ultimate Cause and Origin upon which
every genuinely dependent reality ultimately rests. Creation, nature, life,
consciousness, matter, energy, law, and cosmic development belong to the order
requiring explanation and therefore must not automatically be identified with
their ultimate Source.
Q&A
SECTION
1. Is the
Eternal Source simply another name for God?
The word “God” carries many historical,
religious, cultural, and doctrinal meanings.
DSPES therefore uses the more structurally
precise expression:
Eternal Source—the Ultimate Cause and Origin
of Existence.
The purpose is to define what is meant before
debating inherited terminology.
2. Is
Creation the Eternal Source?
Not automatically.
If Creation possesses structure, development,
evolution, laws, stages, processes, or dependency, its claim to ultimacy must
itself be examined.
3. Could
the universe be its own ultimate cause?
That claim would require showing how a reality
can fully account for its own existence without presupposing the conditions
under which it exists.
Simply declaring the universe self-existing
does not demonstrate it.
4. Who
created the Eternal Source?
If something created it, then that prior
reality would occupy the deeper explanatory position.
The term Eternal Source specifically
refers to the point at which derivative causation ends.
Asking who created an uncreated ultimate
foundation therefore changes the definition being examined.
5. Does
science prove the Eternal Source?
Science examines observable reality and
relationships within it with extraordinary effectiveness.
The ultimate explanation for why any reality
exists at all is primarily a metaphysical question.
Scientific discoveries may inform the
discussion, but the ultimate causal question extends beyond ordinary empirical
measurement.
6. Does
belief in an Eternal Source require blind faith?
It should not.
DSPES rejects the idea that important claims
should be shielded from examination.
The Eternal Source proposition should be
examined through causality, coherence, dependency, contradiction, evidence, and
explanatory sufficiency.
7. Why does
this question matter?
Because our understanding of ultimate reality
affects our understanding of truth, human identity, morality, Creation,
responsibility, life, and purpose.
If human beings are not the origin of reality,
then human preference cannot become the final measure of reality.
CONCLUSION
At some point every worldview reaches its
deepest foundation.
Some stop at matter.
Some stop at energy.
Some stop at consciousness.
Some stop at Nature.
Some stop at Creation.
Some stop at an evolving Absolute.
Some simply declare the question unknowable.
DSPES refuses to stop merely because a large
word has been reached.
It asks one more question:
DOES THE
CLAIMED ULTIMATE REALITY ITSELF REQUIRE EXPLANATION?
If it does, the examination must continue.
The Eternal Source therefore represents not
merely the oldest point in a cosmic timeline but the deepest possible category
of explanation:
That which
does not receive existence from another dependent reality, but upon which
dependent existence ultimately rests.
Creation may reveal extraordinary order.
Life may display astonishing complexity.
Consciousness may explore reality.
Civilizations may accumulate knowledge.
Human beings may reach far into the universe.
Yet none of these achievements make the
observer the origin of what is observed.
The great distinction remains:
THE
CREATED ORDER IS NOT ITS OWN ULTIMATE SOURCE SIMPLY BECAUSE IT EXISTS.
And therefore the foundational DSPES
proposition stands:
THE
ETERNAL SOURCE IS THE ULTIMATE CAUSE AND ORIGIN OF EXISTENCE.
FINAL
ASSESSMENT
The Eternal Source concept survives the
Seven-Pillar examination as a coherent and powerful metaphysical explanation
for the ultimate dependence of existence, provided that its claims remain
carefully distinguished from doctrines that go beyond what the argument itself
establishes.
The strongest conclusion is not that humanity
has completely comprehended the Eternal Source.
It has not.
The stronger and more defensible conclusion
is:
Whatever ultimately explains dependent
existence cannot itself remain merely another unexplained dependent reality.
DSPES calls that ultimate foundation:
THE
ETERNAL SOURCE.
CALL TO
ACTION
Do not ask only:
“What do I believe?”
Ask:
“What does reality require?”
Examine every claimed ultimate reality.
Examine religious claims.
Examine philosophical claims.
Examine cosmological claims.
Examine extraterrestrial claims.
Examine even DSPES itself.
Follow the explanatory chain as far as reason
and evidence permit.
And whenever a proposed ultimate reality still
depends upon something deeper, do not stop merely because tradition, authority,
philosophy, or impressive terminology tells you to stop.
Truth is
measured, not invented.
SIGNATURE
CLOSING PARAGRAPH
I do not present the Eternal Source as a
shortcut around unanswered questions, nor as a name placed over what humanity
does not yet understand. I present the Eternal Source as the necessary subject
of the deepest question reason can ask: What ultimately accounts for
existence itself? Creation may be vast, consciousness may develop,
civilizations may rise, knowledge may expand, and our understanding may
continually be corrected—but the existence of all these realities still
requires an ultimate foundation. For that reason, I use the expression Eternal
Source—the Ultimate Cause and Origin of Existence: not to end examination,
but to identify the point toward which the examination ultimately leads.
