They say:
“My conscience is clear.”
“I followed what I believed was right.”
“I could not act against my conscience.”
These statements can express sincerity. They
can also reveal a serious danger.
Conscience is important. It warns, restrains,
accuses, confirms, and calls a person to account. But conscience is not Truth
itself. It is an inner witness responding to whatever standard has formed it.
A conscience trained by truth can become a
reliable guide.
A conscience trained by error can become a
confident guide in the wrong direction.
This is why inner conviction must never be
treated as self-validating. The real question is not merely, “What do I feel is
right?” The deeper question is:
Is my conscience aligned with the structure of
reality?
Before conscience can guide a person well, it must itself be measured.
