Truth tells what is. Reality reveals what
remains. Logic tests whether our conclusions truly follow.
Every claim asks to be believed. But before
belief is given, three questions must be asked: Is it true? Does it stand in
reality? Does the conclusion actually follow from the evidence?
Truth, reality, and logic are not competing
standards. They work together to protect the human mind from deception,
confusion, manipulation, and sincere error. Truth concerns whether a claim
corresponds with what actually is. Reality reveals the condition, evidence,
consequences, and enduring results of a claim. Logic examines whether the
conclusion follows honestly from the facts.
When these three are separated, people can
become confident without being correct. But when they are brought together,
judgment becomes clearer, humbler, and more responsible.
Human beings are constantly surrounded by
claims. A teacher makes a claim. A religious movement makes a claim. A
politician makes a claim. A scientist, philosopher, influencer, friend, or
family member makes a claim. Even our own emotions and memories make claims
upon our judgment.
The danger is not merely that people may lie.
The greater danger is that people can be sincere, persuasive, intelligent, and
still be wrong.
A statement may sound noble, but fail in
reality. An argument may be logically arranged but begin with a false premise.
A personal experience may be genuine while the interpretation of that
experience remains mistaken.
For this reason, sound judgment requires more
than belief, emotion, tradition, popularity, or intellectual confidence. It
requires the disciplined union of truth, reality, and logic.
Proverbs warns that the prudent person
carefully considers his path. It also reminds us that the first account may
appear convincing until it is examined. This is not an invitation to cynicism.
It is a call to responsible discernment.
